We know that food insecurity is one of the most pervasive issues affecting our nation’s health, and Latino and Black communities are disproportionately affected. In fact, rates of food insecurity are higher than the national average for these households.
Lack of access to food is keeping millions of Americans from achieving their best health. And due to low access to healthy foods, some communities often face more barriers to preventing, managing and treating diet-related diseases such as diabetes. As a result, they face higher rates of not only type 2 diabetes, but other chronic diseases such as obesity and heart disease.
Anthem’s commitment to our community runs deep and our efforts to improve social drivers of health is vital as we work to address health disparities and inequities that are creating barriers to leading healthier lives. It takes ground-level knowledge and a commitment to national change to ensure no one has to choose between eating healthy and eating enough.
Anthem and the Anthem Foundation recently pledged a combined $50 million over the next five years to address health inequities and social injustice. As one of our initial actions, we are pleased to announce a $1 million matching grant by the Anthem Foundation to support an important community partner in Indiana, Gleaners Food Bank, and their No One Runs on Empty Campaign. This grant builds on our existing work to identify the social drivers of health in our community that lead to health disparities.
For every dollar, Gleaners is able to provide five meals. The Anthem Foundation is asking the community to join us in the fight against hunger, and for every donation, they will match it dollar-for-dollar, up to $1 million. If we reach our goal of $2 million, we will be able to provide 10 million meals to Indiana residents in need.

We recognize and value the richness and diversity of our community, but we know we have work to do to ensure we are eliminating health disparities and health inequities that are impacting the health of our community. Through our partnership with Gleaners, we look forward to the tremendous impact we can make together.
