At Anthem, we continue to drive towards a whole-person health approach taking a more holistic view of health and leveraging data that allows us to see and address the most impactful drivers of health. As the nation continues to cope with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, studies have revealed an increased need to address behavioral healthcare[1]. Recognizing that mental health is health, we are leveraging our digital capabilities and partnerships to provide consumers with digital health options that address their behavioral health needs.

Leveraging AI Insights and Data-Driven Applications

As we continue to build a platform for health and leverage data, Anthem developed its Health OS platform, a comprehensive, payor & provider agnostic platform that connects siloed health data and disparate technologies to drive deeper insights and reduce costs and complexity. As behavioral health needs continue to increase, healthcare professionals can anticipate and predict conditions earlier, helping to drive faster, more effective decisions about the next best course of action in a consumers’ health journey, leading to better preventative care. For example, by alerting one doctor about the consumer’s previous visit to another doctor, or about a prescription or past intervention, Health OS can hone a provider’s ability to detect and prevent a consumer’s behavioral health risks earlier and more effectively.

We have also supported the availability of patient-facing digital tools that can help individuals achieve a proactive approach to their mental well-being. Serenity is a companion app, that helps people who might be dealing with anxiety, depression, loneliness, or other behavioral health challenges become more aware of the connections between their thoughts, feeling, and actions. Through Serenity, consumers and members can see how these connections may create barriers to achieving mental well-being, thereby planting the seeds for positive change.

Additionally, research has revealed that 46 percent of individuals who die by suicide had a known mental health condition, according to the National Alliance on Mental Illness. As we continue to leverage a comprehensive approach to address behavioral health needs, Beacon Health Options, an affiliate company of Anthem, Inc., announced its partnership with Oui Therapeutics to reduce member suicide attempts.  By leveraging Beacon’s industry leading behavioral health expertise and Oui’s groundbreaking proprietary approach, which has a history of demonstrating reductions in suicide attempts by more than 50% in randomized controlled trials, the organizations look to reduce suicide attempts by half within five years.

To further drive digital innovative and support for consumers and providers Anthem launched the Anthem Digital Incubator (ADI), an invitation-only initiative that provides resident companies with funding, unique growth and educational opportunities, as well as customized coaching for their innovative solutions. While the concept of an incubator is not new, ADI is the first of its kind in the health insurance industry. ADI and its digital applications are providing solutions that improve health and lower costs, and providing resources communities need to thrive, with an emphasis on driving positive, whole health outcomes – not only physical but behavioral – both of which are needed to thrive:

  • The first start-up to join the ADI was Toucan, which addresses behavioral health access, availability, and cost, and is focused on decreasing social stigmas around seeking help. Toucan provides a single access point, connecting users 1:1 and anonymously for “Huddles” to discuss a shared, lived experience. Instead of siloed help groups for each issue, Toucan allows users to address their whole-person health – speaking and listening on topics based on their needs of the moment.
  • In June, Ksana Health joined the Anthem Digital Incubator to pilot Vira, an app that converts quantifiable behavioral patterns that are collected passively via smartphone into objective and actionable insights. Mental health practitioners can use Vira’s real-time data to develop personalized interventions that meet patients where they are.

Improving Access, Relevance and Removing Barriers

We understand the critical role we play shaping the future of health and helping people lead healthier lives. It’s through data-driven insights and ecosystem partnerships that we are able to provide consumers and providers with a means of engagement, and create immediate, adaptive, and scalable services to help address essential behavioral health needs. With our platform for health, we are implementing the connections among people and data to address whole-health needs in a proactive, predictive, and personalized way.
