Patient Safety

Patient safety is the science of avoiding or preventing injuries or other harm that can result from medical errors or accidents. For example, patient safety efforts may focus on reducing health care-associated infections, hospital readmissions or medication errors.

Since improving safety often involves establishing new processes and procedures for care, making progress can be tough. Lucian Leape, known as the “Father of Patient Safety,” sums it up: “To reduce injury rates in healthcare we have to redesign our systems.” Thankfully, health system innovators are tackling this issue head-on, identifying ways to reduce preventable errors and make our health system a safer place to seek care.
