Data & Analysis
Big Data are playing a big – and growing – role in health care. Thanks to advances in health IT such as the development of electronic health records (EHRs) and disease registries, the health care industry can access a massive amount of valuable information that used to reside only on paper. And thanks to the advent of next-generation computing, it is able to analyze these data and glean important insights into how to improve the quality and safety of health care.
Indeed, big data analysis has already proven useful in identifying high-risk patients who may need extra care, supporting clinical decision-making and generally spotting patterns and trends that can help providers understand what works and what doesn’t. Still, harnessing the full potential of big data is a long way off. But as scientists and researchers continue to develop tools to analyze and apply big data in a practical way, the health care system – and patients in particular – will continue to benefit from the insights they provide.
