Community Collaborations to Support Those Affected by Cancer

The way we treat cancer is changing. If you walk into a cancer center today, you’ll quickly realize that it takes effective communication and coordination for teams to care for people diagnosed with cancer. To deliver high-quality care, cancer teams must have the right resources – patient information, a cancer plan, and more. As the way we treat cancer has evolved and become more personalized, payers, providers, and cancer care professionals have had to take a fresh look at the tools and resources we provide to those we serve who are managing cancer. That’s why Anthem teamed up with nonprofits, academics, pharmaceutical companies, and other organizations to create the resources featured in Stronger Together. The website offers tools for those touched by cancer – including survivors, employees, managers, caregivers, and at-risk individuals. Here are a few of examples of what Stronger Together offers:

 

  • Let’s Talk Treatment Options

Receiving a cancer diagnosis can be overwhelming. Let’s Talk Treatment Options guides individuals with a cancer diagnosis through a discovery process to help them articulate what information and questions they should share with their doctor to find the treatment that’s right for their unique situation. The resource is a collaboration among Anthem, the Cancer Support Community and Genentech, who have all come together to build this tool and better support individuals through the often difficult process of a new diagnosis.

 

  • Workplace Transitions for People Touched by Cancer

Workplace Transitions helps workplace managers support employees with cancer and those caregiving for a loved one with cancer. The tool provides guidance to managers on how to support an employee’s return-to-work from a practical, psychosocial, and legal perspective. It’s free for large and small employers to use.  As Matthew Shaulis, president, North America for Pfizer Oncology, shared, “Employers are more conscious than ever about how they’re managing the health of their workforce. By working collaboratively with Anthem, the US Business Leadership Network, and Cancer and Careers, we’re able provide a variety of resources to employers to help them fully support employees who are managing cancer from all angles.”

 

  • Take Action for Health

According to the American Cancer Society, African Americans have the highest death rate and shortest survival of any racial and ethnic group in the US for most cancers[1]. Take Action for Health helps African Americans learn about their risk for cancer (in addition to heart health and emotional well-being) and provides tools to support proactive steps to managing their health.  “Everyone involved with this project, Anthem, City of Hope, the National Urban League and Pfizer shares a commitment to develop cutting-edge approaches to eliminate health disparities and address the social determinants of health in the communities we serve,” said Hal Smith, senior vice president of education and health at the National Urban League.

 

These are just some of the resources that Stronger Together offers. Just as cancer teams must work together to treat patients, health care stakeholders must work together to empower patients outside of treatment. Whether someone is managing a disease, returning to work after chemotherapy, dealing with the financial burdens of care, or taking care of a loved one with cancer, it’s up to us to be there for them. Stronger Together is a starting point for anyone dealing with cancer – from diagnosis to survivorship, and everything in between.
